September 2015: The Oberaar Glacier, seen from the dam wall at the eastern end of the lake on August 8th, 2015. As almost everywhere the glaciers in the Alps are retreating, they get shorter and also much thinner. Some years ago the glacier snout reached the lake, but now it's quite a distance from the lakeshore to the glacier. Although it is in the Swiss glacier monitoring network it wasn't measured last year. This year it probably retreated even more than the years before after such a warm summer. As you can see there are many areas without snow even in top regions of the glacier. You can consider this picture beautiful - or tragic and very sad as probably irreversible: this is an unique natural phenomenon in its final death throes.
