At first I didn't believe my eyes when I saw this diagram: I can't remember that ever the Antarctic sea ice extent was below the average - and this happened when I heard that they had quite a hard winter in the southern hemisphere. What does it mean? Was it really so low or is the data wrong? The bad thing is that at the same time the Arctic sea ice extent also was very low: 1'566'000km2 below the 1979-2008 mean: this makes a total of 2'150'000km2 below the mean - was it ever so low before?
