July 2025: European peacock [Inachis io, syn. Nymphalis io] (Tagpfauenauge): I saw this butterfly often fifty years ago, but today it's an unusual event and not easy any more to shoot a photograph of this butterfly. Its caterpillars' food are stinging nettles which are pulled out everywhere. This is a first generation's butterfly. The second generation flies from August to October, overwinters and can be seen in March already. There are some flies and ichneumon flies that are parasitic to the caterpillars which protect themselves by a spun yarn, sometimes all over the nettles.
