As you can see, yesterday was a lovely, bright and sunny blue-sky day.
However, it was quite blustery and did not get much above freezing. The
temperature at the time I took the photo (1 pm) was 1C. I measured the snow
depth in the area near the site and it averaged at 460 mm. But there was a
lot of variation in depths, which I think is due to the increased rate of
melting. We have had almost a week of daytime temperatures well above
freezing, most of the days much warmer than yesterday.
Last year at this time our snow depth was deeper that this year, at 510 mm.
But I noticed from my notes from April 2012 that the temperatures were
about the same, right around or just below freezing.
We will see many changes this month. Not only will most (likely all) of the
snow melt but by the end of the month we are likely to see the first tree
buds bursting forth and the summer birds will be reappearing as they
migrate north for the breeding season. That is something I always look
forward to.
Our sun rose yesterday at 7:02 am and set at 8:49 pm for a total day length
of 13 hours and 47 minutes.
