Saguaro fruit. One of the native tribes, Tohono O'odham, in our area will harvest the saguaro fruit
to make jam. You have to have a very long pole to reach the top of the saguaro to
get them down. It is easier to harvest the prickly pear fruit to make jam. I have
done this with my own kids. You just have to filter the juice from the fruit
carefully because there are small stickers on the fruit. We used to have a pet
desert tortoise that loved the fruit and i would feed them to her all of the time.
The bird is a white winged dove that lives in the desert. All kinds of birds and
bats will eat the fruit and when they fall down the rodents, coyotes and javelina
will have at them.
