Picture looking northeast, taken from an elevation of 1600 metres. Down toward Bozeman, at elevations around 1300 or 1400 metres, snow has already melted from many fields. From our elevation south, up into the Yellowstone ecosystem, a lot of snow remains. Only in the past days do we see snow melting from the open fields at this elevation. The adjacent forest holds abundant snow; meltwater runs down the trails and roads. No leaves yet on any of the deciduous trees or shrubs. First green grass just starting to appear in the exposed spots near the house. Deer browsing voraciously on anything green, even on supposedly-unpalatable plants like tulips.
